5th Grade writing assignment

Dear Parents,
This is an assignment your child will be receiving soon. Thank you for any help or guidance for their writing. The theme of the music program is "Holiday Magic". It will include songs about snow, Santa, the coming holidays and family.

Holiday Traditions Writing Assignment

Most families have their own special traditions during the holidays. Some of you may go visit grandma or other relatives. You may serve certain foods during the holidays or bake special cookies. Some of you may go to church or travel on a vacation to someplace warm. Maybe you take special shopping trips, play out in the snow, go hunting or just spend time together with your family.

You have a choice of 2 for your writing assignment. Choice 1: write about traditions in your family from Thanksgiving to New Years. You will be able to go into more details if you choose one event such as putting up or decorating the tree, baking, Christmas Eve or Christmas Day rather than giving an overview of the whole holiday season. Choice 2: write a haiku or cinquain poem.

Choice 1: You need to have 3 paragraphs. Each paragraph needs at least 5 sentences. Of course, feel free to do more! You may type it if you like. The final draft is due Dec. 8th. I will be checking on your progress during music class before that time. I will be grading on your ideas (details), word choice (descriptive adjectives), and conventions (spelling, punctuation).

Choice 2:
1. HAIKU is a form of Japanese poetry. The pattern for Haiku is the following:
Line 1 has 5 syllables
Line 2 has 7 syllables
Line 3 has 5 syllables
2. CINQUAIN poems have five lines and the following pattern:
Line 1 is the subject and is one word
Line 2 has two adjectives that describe the subject
Line 3 has three “ing” words that show the action of the subject
Line 4 has four words that express a feeling about the subject
Line 5 has a synonym for the subject and is also one word
