March MV Music News

2010
Dear Parents,

In the month of March and part of April, all 4th graders will be developing performance skills such as posture, singing in tune, correct breathing for a rich tone. We will use these skills as we prepare for our spring program entitled, “Boogie Right on to School”, which will include songs about a day at school. Some students will have speaking parts and a few solo parts. 4th grade choir has been sounding great and will perform at the program. Nice school clothes will be appropriate for the program. Our program will be given at the Sparta Senior High Auditorium on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 10:15 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Hope to see you all there!

5th graders are getting ready for testing on recorders, performing their own compositions, the C scale and performing in a team. A few students have been coming unprepared to class. Any help in finding lost recorders would be appreciated. Please do encourage boys and girls to practice so they may perform well on their tests. Thank you. Green worm practice sheets should be turned in by March 5th to receive extra credit.

After recorder testing is finished, 5th graders will be getting into listening teams and answering questions about the 11 compositions we have been studying. We will be doing matching games on the information in their listening packets. There will be a test on that information in April. The top 6 students will compete in a listening competition held in Cashton in May. In the last few years I have had teams going on to a state competition, which means the students have been learning a lot about music and composers.

5th grade choir is busy preparing for their trip to Winona April 16th. I could use a few more chaperones for that day. I hope everyone likes their T shirts. They look great. I have 2 extras in smaller sizes if anyone is interested. The choir sounds great and they will look great, too.

I will be at Meadowview on March 11, 3:30- 6:30 in the LMC for conferences.

January Music News

January Music News, 2010

4th Graders will be finishing up on their recorders. They will be performing their compositions and will need to be able to play them without the note names written in. This will require extra practice so please encourage that. Please send back the green practice sheets you have been signing by January 25th. 4th grade will also be singing Dr Martin Luther King songs and learning about forms: AB, ABA and Rondo. We will also be working on music listening skills.

4th grade choir will begin on Day 2 second semester so look for a sign up sheet for that soon. The only time I have is over the noon hour. It will require students missing noon recess once a week. Regular attendance is expected.

5th Graders will be starting recorders January 13, so please remind them to be prepared with their recorders on music days. We will be alternating recorders with listening lessons, studying 11 compositions, their composers, form, style, instruments, and mood. In April, 6 students will be chosen to compete in a regional music listening contest, similar to a spelling bee.

5th grade choir members will be preparing for their songfest trip on Friday, April 16, to Winona State University. It is a fun day with boys and girls singing for and singing with 500 area choir members. I will need chaperones for this trip, please, if you have time to volunteer.

February Music News

Meadowview February Newsletter, 2010

Dear Parents,

4th grade is now working on hearing meter and form. We are listening for large sections in music with parts that sound the same or different. We will be studying 11 compositions, listening for style and learning about the composers, instruments, form, tempo, dynamics and meter. We will begin working on our spring program the later part of February. Please mark your calendars! 4th grade program will be April 15, 2010 at the High School at 7:00 P.M.

4th grade choir began January 12 and will meet every week on Day 2. I have about 60+ signed up for choir and they sound great! They will perform on the spring program.

5th graders are expanding their recorder skills. We will soon be working on the C scale. Please encourage them to bring their recorders home and be sure to mark their green practice sheets! Some students are coming unprepared to class, with no recorders. After practicing, students should put the recorder right back in the backpack so they’re ready to go. We are also studying 11 compositions and are learning about different styles of music. Some are very different from any they have heard before! 6 music students will be chosen to compete in the music listening contest in May.

5th grade choir is working hard on the songs for the Winona songfest on April 16. T shirts are ordered. I will need chaperones for that trip. Additional information will come as I hear more.
