MVI October Music News

Meadowview Intermediate 2009

Students are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the recorders. We will not start working on them officially until Oct. 22nd for 4th grade and January 4th for 5th grade. Any 4th grade students bringing recorders from home should bring them to music beginning Oct. 22nd.

In October, we will continue playing rhythms and singing rounds and partner songs to hear harmony. We have been doing worksheets and other activities to help us learn musical terms, dynamics and tempo markings. Watch for homework assignments connected with that. Some students have been late with worksheets. Students have music on days 3, 4, or 5 at Meadowview. Please remind them to be prepared for class.

We have been working on music vocabulary. Most musical terms are in Italian because that is where they originated from, so you may hear vocabulary that doesn’t sound familiar. 4th grade will soon be learning note names on the staff.

We will also be singing and listening to major and minor tonality. Halloween songs are primarily in minor. We will have some fun accompanying and singing seasonal songs.

I have a wonderful group of singers in 5th grade choir, “The Meadowlarks”. We are working on our breathing and vocal technique. We are also practicing songs for Veterans Day.

I will be at Meadowview for conferences on Tuesday, Oct. 13th 3:30- 6:30 p.m. and on Friday, the 9th from 7:30 until 10:30 a.m. Please look for me in the LMC on Tuesday and the music room on Friday.

5th Grade Choir

To: 5th Grade Parents
From: Mrs. Bright
Re: 5th Grade Choir

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Choir will meet on Day 4 from 2:35 – 3:10 P.M. We will begin September 11, 2009.

The main goal for choir will be to expand our singing skills and repertoire and to perform for events. We perform at many events throughout the year such as the Veterans program at school, caroling at the Morrow Home, walking and singing in the Sparta holiday parade, singing at our holiday school program, and singing for awards day. This is a year-long commitment that the boys and girls need to take seriously in order to represent Sparta well as we perform at these public functions.

Please consider these requirements for participation in choir:
Must enjoy singing and being an enthusiastic participant!
Must be able to attend all rehearsals (2 unexcused absences means dismissal)
Must be a team player, work for the good of the group
Must show the ability to listen, wait and maintain focus while Mrs. Bright works
with sections of singers
Must show desire to improve in skill and ability
Must show evidence of being trustworthy in all places, school, home and community
Must return form on or before Sept. 11

Thank you for your interest and support of this music enrichment activity.

Mrs. Bright

If interested, please sign and return the following form by September 11, 2009.

My child/student has my permission to be in choir.

September Music News

2009
Meadowview Intermediate
Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am anxiously looking forward to meeting my new students and to welcoming familiar faces back! It is always an exciting time of year.

I am at three buildings again this year: Cataract, Lakeview Montessori and Meadowview Intermediate. I see all students twice a week for thirty minutes. I start at Cataract and travel to Lakeview on Days 1 and 2. On Days 3, 4 and 5 I am at Meadowview all day. Please feel free to contact me at Meadowview 269-2187, extension #7119, at home 786-1859 or via e-mail cbright@spartan.org.

The music curriculum, based on the National Standards for Music Education, guides what children should know and be able to do in music. The nine standards are:

1. Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
2. Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
3. Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments.
4. Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines.
5. Reading and notating music.
6. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.
7. Evaluating music and music performances.
8. Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.
9. Understanding music in relation to history and culture.

The first month of school we will be finding our voices again and tuning them up to be able to match pitches. We will use the solfege syllables to help us with that. We will be reviewing note names and values, tapping out simple rhythm patterns and working on mallet technique with the Orff instruments. I follow all the same homework and grading guidelines as stated in the student handbook. It is important for students to be prepared with assignments on music days. All district literacy initiatives are also supported in music classes.

This year the 5th graders will have a holiday program on Dec. 16th, at 7:00 P.M. at the high school. They will improve their recorder skills starting in January. The 4th grade will have a spring program on April 15 at 7:00 P.M. also at the high school. They will use their recorders beginning in November. An order form will be coming home soon for students without recorders. Those forms and monies are due September 18th in the music room.

5th grade choir will meet on Day 4 from 2:30-3:10. Please discuss this enrichment activity with your son or daughter.

I’m looking forward to working with your son/daughter, strengthening their listening, singing, moving, creating and performing skills.

Musically,
Mrs. Bright

Recorder Information

Dear Parents and Guardians,

All music students will be learning to play the recorder during the school year. The recorder is a pre-band musical instrument we study to aid in learning note names and caring for and playing an instrument. The recorder we will be using is a two-piece plastic Tudor recorder. I will provide many songsheets for the boys and girls to practice playing. If you already have a recorder that is in good playing condition, please disregard this order form.
There are school recorders available for use, which have been sterilized. However, I highly recommend that the students purchase their own recorders. Not only will the students be more responsible with their recorders, but also because the recorders will be used in 3rd through 6th grade music class.
If interested, please fill out the order blank and return to Mrs. Bright, in the music room, as soon as possible. No orders will be accepted after Wednesday, September 16, 2009. We will be ordering directly from Dana’s Music so please make checks to Dana’s Music for the exact amount. Cash must be in the exact amount also.

Thank you.
